Indian stock markets ended lower on 22 July 2026, with both benchmark indices closing in the red

Indian stock market performance today

Indian stock markets ended sharply lower on 22 July 2026, with the post-close picture showing broad-based selling across banking, IT, and pharmaceutical stocks. The Sensex fell 715.06 points or 0.92% to close at 76,755.05, while the Nifty 50 dropped 191.45 points or 0.79% to settle at 23,996.25, slipping back below the 24,000 mark.

The day’s weakness was driven by a mix of rising crude oil prices, renewed geopolitical tension, and heavy institutional selling, which kept sentiment cautious through the session. Market breadth was clearly negative, with decliners outnumbering gainers, even though some pockets like auto and FMCG offered limited support.

Among the top gainers, Bajaj Auto stood out as one of the strongest performers on the Nifty 50, helped by optimism around its quarterly performance. Other gainers included Nestle India and ONGC, while the broader market also saw selective buying in auto and FMCG names.

On the losers side, InterGlobe Aviation, Jio Financial Services, Infosys, SBI, and Dr Reddy’s Laboratories were among the biggest drags on the index. Pharmaceutical counters also came under pressure after tariff-related concerns, adding to the overall risk-off mood in the market.

Sectorally, the heaviest pressure came from PSU banks, realty, IT, and pharma, while FMCG and auto showed relative resilience. The Nifty FMCG index gained around 0.65% and the Nifty Auto index rose 0.18%, but these gains were not enough to offset the broader decline in large-cap benchmarks.

Summary

Overall, Indian stock market today 22 July 2026 closed lower, with Sensex and Nifty ending in the red, Nifty slipping below 24,000, and stocks like Bajaj Auto, Nestle India, and ONGC among the gainers, while InterGlobe Aviation, Infosys, SBI, and Dr Reddy’s were among the top losers.
