Indian stock markets ended lower on 21 July 2026, with both benchmark indices closing in the red

Indian stock market performance today

Indian stock markets ended lower on 21 July 2026, marking a second straight day of weakness as selling pressure in heavyweight financial and IT stocks outweighed selective buying in auto, cement, and a few financial names. The Sensex closed at 77,470.11, down 238.41 points or 0.31%, while the Nifty 50 ended at 24,187.70, down 50.80 points or 0.21%.

The market’s mood remained cautious through the session, with broader indices showing better resilience than the large-cap benchmarks. Midcap and smallcap stocks held up relatively well, but the headline indices were dragged lower by weakness in banks, IT, and some large-cap heavyweights.

Among the top gainers, Shriram Finance led the Nifty 50 pack with a rise of 2.77%, followed by Bajaj Finserv at 2.11%, Eicher Motors at 1.73%, UltraTech Cement at 1.45%, and HCL Technologies at 1.33%.
In the broader market, several smaller names also saw strong buying interest, showing that stock-specific action remained active despite the weak benchmark close.

On the losers side, HDFC Bank was the biggest drag, falling 2.07%. It was followed by Infosys, down 1.52%, State Bank of India, down 1.48%, Tata Consultancy Services, down 1.43%, and Reliance Industries, down 1.40%.
This correction is important because Tech Mahindra was also on the losing side by the close, with IT weakness weighing on the index alongside Infosys and TCS.

Sectorally, the weakness was concentrated in IT and PSU banks, while auto, metal, and realty showed relative strength. That mix suggests investors are still rotating selectively rather than making broad index bets, with earnings, global cues, and risk sentiment continuing to shape daily moves.

Summary

Overall, the Indian stock market today reflected a range-bound and cautious tone after close, with benchmark indices slipping modestly but not collapsing. For SEO use, the key themes are: Sensex and Nifty close lower, IT stocks under pressure, HDFC Bank among top losers, and Shriram Finance, Bajaj Finserv, and HCLTech among top gainers.
