Indian stock market performance today

Indian stock markets closed lower on 24 July 2026, extending their losing streak for a fifth straight session as geopolitical tensions, weak global cues, and continued foreign fund outflows kept investors on the defensive. The Sensex ended at 76,059.17, down 331 points or 0.43%, while the Nifty 50 settled at 23,767.70, down 102 points or 0.43%, marking another day below the 24,000 level.

The session was marked by broad-based weakness in auto, metal, and realty stocks, even though gains in IT and media helped limit the downside somewhat. Market breadth remained slightly positive on the BSE, but that did little to change the overall cautious mood, especially after a weak weekly performance and fresh concerns over crude prices and trade tensions.

Among the top gainers, Cipla, Trent, and HDFC Life Insurance led the Nifty 50 pack, showing that select defensives and consumption-linked names still found buyers.
Earlier intraday action also saw HCL Technologies, Wipro, and ITC among the better performers, reinforcing the theme of selective rotation into defensive and quality large-cap names.

On the losers side, Eternal, Bajaj Finance, and Infosys were among the weakest stocks by the close, while broader selling also hit names like HFCL, Swiggy, Hero MotoCorp, and several industrial and financial counters.hdfcsky+1
This highlights that the day’s pressure was not limited to one sector, but spread across consumer technology, lending, autos, and infrastructure-linked stocks.

Sectorally, the market remained under stress from crude oil volatility, West Asia tensions, and persistent foreign selling, even as Brent eased later in the session. The week as a whole was also disappointing, with the Nifty 50 and Sensex posting their worst weekly decline in four months.

Summary

Indian stock market today 24 July 2026 closed lower, with Sensex and Nifty falling for the fifth consecutive session, Nifty ending below 23,800, and Cipla, Trent, and HDFC Life among the top gainers, while Eternal, Bajaj Finance, and Infosys were among the top losers
