Indian Stock Market Wrap: Sensex Tumbles 876 Points as Banking Sell-Off and Crude Headwinds Drag Nifty Below 22,900

Indian benchmark equity indices suffered a sharp sell-off on Monday, October 19, 2026, completely unwinding last week’s recovery gains. Intraday weakness was driven by intense liquidation across major private banking heavyweights following below-estimate Q2FY27 earnings scorecards, persistent Foreign Institutional Investor (FII) cash outflows, and renewed inflation anxiety linked to surging Brent crude oil prices.

At the closing bell, the BSE Sensex plunged 876.37 points (-1.17%) to settle at 73,852.90. Concurrently, the NSE Nifty 50 cracked 257.20 points (-1.11%) to finish at 22,888.95, slipping below the key 22,900 technical support mark. Broad-market indices also ended in the red, with the sell-off wiping out nearly ₹4.70 lakh crore in total market capitalization of BSE-listed entities.
