Indian Stock Market Wrap: Benchmarks Extend Decline as IT and Consumer Durables Drag

Indian equity benchmarks closed lower for the second consecutive session on Tuesday, September 29, 2026. Ongoing macro pressure from elevated international crude oil prices, a weakening Rupee beyond the 96/$ mark, and steady Foreign Institutional Investor (FII) liquidations weighed heavily on market sentiment.

At the closing bell, the BSE Sensex slipped 242.65 points (-0.33%) to settle at 72,529.07, after recovering from an intraday low of 72,064. Concurrently, the NSE Nifty 50 shed 64.05 points (-0.28%) to finish at 22,716.20, holding just above its technical support around 22,700. Sectoral performance was largely negative, led by declines in Consumer Durables (-2.71%), Realty (-2.00%), IT (-1.48%), and Auto (-1.33%), though gains in Metal (+0.78%) and Pharma (+0.64%) helped limit deeper benchmark losses.
