The Indian stock market ended lower on Tuesday, 4 August 2026, snapping a four-day winning streak as widespread profit-booking emerged across FMCG, real estate, banking, and IT sectors. Market participants turned cautious ahead of the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) upcoming monetary policy decision and adjusted to volatility caused by the newly introduced Closing Auction Session (CAS).

The benchmark BSE Sensex shed 210.08 points (0.27%) to close at 78,428.95, while the NSE Nifty 50 dropped 159.40 points (0.64%) to settle at 24,614.90. The Nifty Bank index also retreated, falling 340.75 points (0.58%) to end at 57,907.20.
