Indian stock markets ended lower on 20 July 2026, with both benchmark indices closing in the red after a weak session led by private banking pressure and cautious global cues. The Sensex fell 442.93 points, or 0.57%, to 77,708.52, while the Nifty 50 slipped 95.80 points, or 0.39%, to 24,238.50.
Market close
The sell-off was driven mainly by heavy losses in HDFC Bank and Axis Bank after quarterly earnings disappointment and margin concerns, while broader weakness also came from geopolitical worries and rising crude-related risk sentiment.
Market breadth was negative overall, with decliners outnumbering gainers, showing that the weakness was not limited to a few large stocks.
Top gainers
Among the Nifty 50 names, the day’s top gainers included Trent, Power Grid, NTPC, Bharti Airtel, and Nestle India.
Trent led the pack with a gain of about 3.04%, followed by Power Grid at 2.01% and Nestle India at 1.81%, reflecting selective buying in consumer, utility, and defensive names.
Top losers
The biggest losers were Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, and Maruti Suzuki, with financial stocks doing most of the damage to the indices
Axis Bank fell 5.37% and HDFC Bank dropped 5.08%, while Maruti Suzuki declined 2.06%; Jio Financial Services also ended lower.
Sector view
Sector performance was mixed, but bank and financial stocks were clearly the weakest part of the market.
Gains in PSU banks, metals, pharmaceuticals, and select IT names helped cushion the fall, but they were not enough to offset the drag from private lenders.
Summary
Indian stock market today, 20 July 2026, closed lower as Sensex and Nifty ended in the red after profit-taking and weakness in private banking stocks. The post-market close update shows a cautious tone on Dalal Street, with Axis Bank and HDFC Bank among the top losers, while Trent, Power Grid, and NTPC were the leading gainers
