Indian markets closed marginally higher today (13 May 2026) — Sensex ended roughly flat with a small gain of about 50 points and Nifty closed just above the 23,400 mark, while breadth was mixed with metals and oil & gas leading gains and banks/auto under pressure.
Market details
- Index close: BSE Sensex finished marginally higher, up ~50 points (flat on the day).
- Nifty: NSE Nifty50 closed a little above 23,400, up roughly 30–35 points on the day.
- Sector action: Metal and oil & gas stocks were the main gainers; banking, auto and IT names showed selling pressure.
- Notable stocks: Asian Paints, Tata Steel and some metal names were among the top performers, while M&M, Power Grid and Infosys were among the laggards.
- Market internals: Midcap and smallcap were mixed—midcaps showed modest strength while smallcaps were relatively weaker.
- Derivatives / early cues: GIFT Nifty was trading with a small premium indicating a mildly positive start to the session.
What drove the session
- Buying in metal and commodity-linked names supported the market, while profit-taking or sector-specific weakness weighed on banks, autos and parts of IT.
- Crude oil and global cues (Asian/European moves) influenced flows into energy and commodity stocks during the day.
Short technical note
- Analysts note resistance near the 23,530–23,550 zone for Nifty; as long as Nifty stays below that, some see the bias as cautious with potential downside to ~23,200–23,050 on further weakness.
